Ian & I went to QT for gas & landed at pump #10. I was surprised to see "$30 Prepaid" on the computer screen. I asked the guy next to me if he had just prepaid & if it was showing on his screen. He said "yeah" & when I told him about our pump, he was all excited for me b/c I was getting "free" gas! I pumped the gas all the while thinking how nice it would be to actually get $30 of "free" gas....c'mon, tell me I'm not alone on this guilty thought!
After pumping the gas, Ian was saying what good luck it was that we got our gas for free. The innocence! It was then & there that I realized I was his sole teacher at that moment & what would I do with this lesson staring me in the face? I explained that even though we could drive away, it would be stealing from QT b/c obviously they had made a mistake & had to honor the actual client who did pay $30 at their pump & that us taking the "free" dinero would be wrong. I told him it was very tempting & he said especially with gas prices so high...all ages understand rationalizing & temptation.
We did go inside & asked if there had been a mishap & the clerk VERY gratefully charged our credit card for the $30. Ian was not quite getting it so I had the chance to tell him that God always honors people doing the right thing. That at some time or maybe just in heaven God honors a right decision.
Five hours later I am at Old Navy with Trevor & get an out of town phone call, which I usually let those calls go to VM. I actually answered it & it was a guy who wanted to buy something I had listed on craigslist. This was an item I had on craigslist for about a month, with NO bites until today..an item listed for $30.
I was so excited to share this with Ian & when I got to the part about how the item sold for the same amount as the gas, he literally gasped. He got it. Now, did we need to see a return so quickly, if at all? No. The lesson was learned by just doing the right thing, but God is good & I am grateful for this event today.
